People with cancer and their families have a right to expect that competent and educationally prepared nurses are available to meet their needs wherever they reside throughout Australia.

Working with nurses and other partners the EdCaN project has developed a National Professional Development Framework for Cancer Nursing and a suite of Learning Resources targeted at building capacity of the nursing workforce in cancer control, with the ultimate aim of improving health outcomes for people affected by cancer.

Freely accessible via the Cancer Learning website the EdCaN resources are designed to support the professional development of all nurses in cancer care regardless of experience or setting. They provide highly flexible and accessible education materials to help:

• All nurses achieve the core capabilities required in cancer control


• specialist cancer nurses benchmark against the specialist cancer nurse competency standards


• educators facilitate learning for all nurses in cancer control.

The National Cancer Nursing Education Project (EdCaN) was conducted under the auspices of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and received funding from the Australian Government through Cancer Australia.
